Home Front: Daily Life in the Civil War North
Thursday, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Join us for a curator led tour of the Newberry Library exhibition, Home Front: Daily Life in the Civil War North. Home Front explores the deep connections between Civil War home fronts and battle fronts, revealing that even those who were far removed from the fighting felt the war’s impact every day. Home Front includes paintings from the Terra Foundation of American Art and sheet music, broadsides, books, magazines, and newspapers from the Newberry Library that explore household economies and the cotton economy, slavery and freedom, Indian wars, war relief work, women’s contributions to the war, and depictions of war in children’s literature. Seen together, these objects of daily life demonstrate the profound impact of the Civil War across Northern home fronts. The exhibition tour will be led by Daniel Greene, exhibition co-curator and Vice President for Research and Academic Programs at the Newberry.
