Tilly Fund for Social Science History

At the Hirschman Prize ceremony in October 2008, the SSRC announced the inauguration of the Charles Tilly and Louise Tilly Fund for Social Science History, in cooperation with the Social Science History Association (SSHA). Charles Tilly died just a few weeks after receiving the SSRC's 2008 Albert O. Hirschman Prize, and the fund, which is intended to support graduate-level research and other activities in the field of historical social science, was created to honor his memory as well as the work of his wife, Louise. Both Tillys devoted their careers to cultivating historical social science as an interdisplinary field and to mentoring many students. Charles Tilly's own work in this area dates back to when he edited the SSRC volume The Formation of National States in Western Europe (1975), which broke new ground in establishing historical social science as a field of study.
